Mosquito Bites Can Lead to Dehydration, Get Fluids for Dengue Fever
Fluids for dengue is one of the treatments for dengue fever, especially when the condition is already severe and if the patient has dehydration.
Over the years, there have been many dengue fever cases found in Bali. Dengue fever develops easily in subtropical and tropical countries, for example Indonesia and Bali. This virus can affect anyone and traveling to tropical countries may increase the risk of getting infected. Dengue fever is caused by one of four dengue viruses. The dengue virus itself can lead the illness into two forms, Dengue Fever (DD) and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Basically, dengue hemorrhagic fever is a worse form of dengue fever. Furthermore, severe condition of dengue fever can lead to Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS), this condition can lead to death within 12-24 hours if the patient doesn’t get immediate treatment. If you got infected with dengue fever while traveling in Bali, quickly find medical care and if signs of dehydration appear, it’s important to immediately get fluids for dengue to avoid worse complications.
Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a febrile disease caused by the dengue virus and can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, or status. The cause of this disease is the dengue virus which spreads through the bite of certain mosquitoes. The mosquitoes that have the possibility to transmit dengue fever virus are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Usually, mosquitoes that carry dengue virus bite people on the ankle and neck area and can be found in crowded places, for example the center of Denpasar. Most dengue fever cases happen during the rainy season and transmission often happens in the daytime. After infected, the person will enter an incubation period of around 3-14 days and later will show some symptoms of dengue fever. It is advised to consult with a doctor so the right treatment can be done. Moreover, fluids for dengue is an alternative way to treat severe dengue fever, especially if the patient experiences dehydration.
Symptoms
Typically, dengue fever symptoms begin with a high body temperature and may reach to over 40 degrees celsius for around 4-7 days after being bitten by a mosquito carrying the dengue virus. The following are other common symptoms of dengue fever:
- High fever;
- Pain in the back of the eyeball;
- Severe headache;
- Severe muscle, bone, and joint pain;
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Loss of appetite
- Reddish rash will appear all over the body for 3-4 days after fever occurs and later decrease after 1-2 days. A second rash may appear a few days later.
It should be noted that some people may only show mild symptoms, such as fever. On the other hand, severe conditions of dengue fever, for example dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome can be fatal if left untreated. These conditions can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, serious bleeding, and even death if the patient doesn’t get immediate treatment.
Fluids for Dengue Fever Treatment
Specific treatment to treat dengue fever are limited. Patients may get intravenous therapy (IV Therapy) as the fluids for dengue treatment. Intravenous fluid therapy is intended to prevent dehydration caused by fever and vomiting. Below are some efforts to treat dengue fever that doctors may recommend:
- Get enough rest;
- Drink plenty of water/get fluids for dengue to prevent or treat dehydration;
- Take paracetamol to treat fever;
- Avoid pain relievers as they can cause bleeding complications;
- Pay attention to urine output and urination frequency.
Fluids for dengue/Intravenous fluid administration is indicated for patients who develop clinical signs of dehydration, such as the following:
- Increased thirst, dry mouth, dry skin;
- Dizziness, headache, tired;
- Hypotension (low blood pressure);
- Tachycardia (when the heart beats faster than normal);
- Prolonged capillary refill time (sign of shock, can indicate dehydration);
- Rising volume of red blood cells;
- Cool or mottled skin;
- Decreased amount of urine that comes out, urine looks more yellowish;
- Narrowed pulse pressure;
- Altered mental status (changes/disruption in brain function).
If signs of dehydration appear after being bitten by a mosquito with dengue virus, do not hesitate to get intravenous fluids for dengue to treat dehydration. Book IV Therapy Service through Medi-Call application or simply contact Medi-Call Hotline at +62 81210783387.
